One of the most spectacular excursions that can be made in the beautiful mountainous area of Mallorca is a visit to the castle of Alaró. It can only be reached on foot but during the 20 minute climb up the hill, you can enjoy, (on a bright day) a sensational view of the plain “Es Pla”, the bays of Palma and Alcúdia and the “Serra de Tramuntana” – the Tramuntana mountains –. This is one of the few points from which the whole island can be seen.

The remains of the ancient Castle of the Puig de Alaró (the hill of Alaró) date back to the Muslim age. For eight and a half years from 902, it was a shelter for the resistance against the Arab conquest. Everyone knows the legend of 1285, as well as the fierce resistance put up by Guillem Cabrit and Guillem Bassa, who were loyal to King Jaume II against King Alfonso II of Catalonia and Aragon. After the conquest of the castle they paid for this resistance with their lives, burnt at the stake

Furthermore, the fact that you can spend a romantic or an adventurous evening in this castle is sensational. Spend a night shut in among the walls of this old castle! For only €6 per person you will stay in a kind of cell room with several beds. There are double rooms, as well as rooms with 5, 6, 8 and 10 beds.
To enjoy this adventure you will only need a sleeping bag, sheets and a towel. It is better for you not to carry too much baggage because of the slope of the hill, as you will have to climb it on foot. You can park your car in the flat area of “Es Verger” or a little further at the restaurant. To reach it you have to go across the town of Alaró and then take the road in the direction of Orient until you arrive to the country state “Es Verger”.

Depending on the season, your sleeping bag should be a warm one, as there is no heating between the ancient walls of the castle the only a fireplace in the bar where you can get something to eat In spite of this, in the colder months of the year, you can enjoy absolute peace in a wonderful spot, especially during the week. The small chapel of the castle is also worth seeing.
