When the little figure from Siurell sprang forth magical powers were attributed to this little whistle. For some time the winds of Mallorca instilled fear in the islands inhabitants, they were uncontrollable forces of nature to which they were exposed without recourse and the whistles of Siurell were a totem of protection against the tempestous winds.
Robert Graves described as “magical” the little earthen figures and said that in many cultures it was usual to use the whistle to frighten away the winds that brought misfortune and to attract the good breezes with their higher notes.
Graves wrote about the similarity of the Siurell with the Sirens, women from the waist up with the feet of birds who may have originated in Babylonian Myth.
